Pecorino Cheese and Nobile di Montepulciano Wine Tour Program
After your English-speaking driver comes to get you at your place of stay, you will be off to Montepulciano, a particularly well preserved hilltop town in one of Tuscany's most enchanted landscapes: the Orcia Valley. During your stroll around the town you will visit one of the ancient vaulted town cellars and taste some very good wines. Lunch is served in one of our favorite superior category restaurants in the historic center of the old city.

In the afternoon you'll visit the town of Pienza, about a 20-minute drive across the Val d'Orcia from Montepulciano. The main street of Pienza is crowded with tiny gourmet cheese and food shops where you can taste many different varieties of cheese. Some are aged in walnut leafs, others are covered in ashes or adorned with grape skins to make ā€œdrunkā€ cheese. Your last stop will be a visit to a cheese producer where you will discover how the local pecorino sheep cheeses are made and you can sample pecorino in the many stages of aging from soft and fresh to hard and complex.

More On Montepulciano, Vino Nobile, and Pienza
The walled town of Montepulciano is perched atop one of Tuscany's high peaks, at 605 metres, or 1,950 feet, above sea level. It contains many well-displayed and accessible art treasures, as well as Etruscan and Roman wine cellars, some dating back to the time before Christ. This city is known for its red wines, the most famous being the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a medium body wine, rich in color with a good tannin structure. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is made from a Sangiovese clone that is locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. As early as the seventeenth century it was crowned by many as as "the king of Tuscan wines", and because the nobility eagerly sought it out, it became known as 'noble' and 'aristocratic' wine, hence the name.

In the 15th Century, Pienza was a small fortified hilltop town of no particular distinction until Pope Pius II (Enea Silvio Piccolomini, 1405-1464, pope in 1458) decided to transform it into an ā€œidealā€ Renaissance city, a city planning endeavor in which he partially succeeded. Today the town's unique architectural and artistic characteristics have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
