Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Tour Highlights Explore the medieval city of San Gimignano Learn about and taste several different Vernaccia white wines Explore the Tuscan countryside in a luxury vehicle with driver
Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Tour Program Your English-speaking driver with luxury vehicle will meet you at your hotel in the morning and you will set off across rolling Tuscan hills to your first destination: the wine region surrounding San Gimignano. Your first visit is to a historic Vernaccia wine cellar on the outskirts of San Gimignano. At the winery, you'll learn about both ancient and modern winemaking techniques and see how a winery can interweave tradition and innovation to produce superb wine. Your guided tasting will include Vernaccia di San Gimignano and other estate wines. You'll then be transported back to medieval times as you visit the amazingly well preserved medieval town of San Gimignano. It is known as the ?¢‚Ǩ?ìcity of the fair towers?¢‚Ǩ¬ù with its fourteen soaring towers (of the seventy-six original). You can have a relaxing lunch in an enchanting wine and food bar that serves up delicious dishes paired perfectly with the local Vernaccia wine. In the afternoon you'll visit another winery and be able to compare and contrast winemaking styles and techniques with the winery you previously visited. You will of course have a chance to sample their Vernaccia wine as well as their extra-virgin olive oil.
Vernaccia White Wine and the City of Towers Set half-way between Florence and Siena, you can see the distinct skyline of more than a dozen jutting towers as you approach San Gimignano from any direction. The surrounding landscape of rolling green hills provides the perfect climate to grow the town's now famous white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano. The town has much to offer, including medieval history, delicious foods and endless handicrafts. The name of the grape variety, Vernaccia, almost certainly derives from the Latin vernaculus meaning ?¢‚Ǩ?ìone of the house, home, place, or town?¢‚Ǩ¬ù suggesting that the grape is indeed indigenous to the area. In 1966, Vernaccia di San Gimignano was the first wine in Italy to be granted the prestigious DOC recognition. In 1990 it gained further importance by being assigned the DOCG recognition. In recent years the area has also shown an interesting potential for great red wines as well.
